DC 37, largest public employee union in New York, endorses City Council member Charles Barron for Congress in Brooklyn 8th C.D.
New York, N.Y. – District Council 37, the city’s largest public employee union with 121,000 members and 50,000 retirees, voted overwhelmingly to endorse City Council member Charles Barron for Congress in Brooklyn’s 8th Congressional District in the June 26th primary election.
The vote by the DC 37 Delegates on Tuesday, May 22, followed a recommendation of the DC 37 Screening Committee and a vote by the DC 37 Executive Board.
DC 37 Executive Director Lillian Roberts announced the union’s endorsement of City Council member Charles Barron on the steps of City Hall on Thursday, May 24 surrounded by union leaders and activists who joined her in highlighting Barron’s leadership and support of the union’s budgetary and legislative priorities.
Roberts said, “Throughout the years, Council member Charles Barron has been a committed advocate for the issues that matter to DC 37 and its members, such as affordable housing, funding for CUNY, and the city’s cultural institutions and libraries. He has also been an outspoken supporter of public education and the fight against mayoral control, co-location, school closings, charter schools and the fight for parental involvement. He has been a strong supporter of public health and the city’s Health and Hospitals Corp. and the fight to end health disparities.”
Others praising Council member Barron as a strong advocate for the preservation of the city’s safety net, a fierce and vocal opponent of the closing of community day care centers, the privatization of other city services and the layoff of workers who provide them, included DC 37 Retirees Association President Stuart Leibowitz, SSEU Local 371 V.P. for Political Action Michelle Akempkong, Local 1549 1st V.P. Ralph Palladino and Local 375 President Behourz Fathi.
“DC 37 stands with Council member Charles Barron as he vows to continue his fight in Congress to provide the services his constituents and DC 37’s members need to make valuable contributions to their communities,” Roberts added. She noted that the DC 37 endorsement carries with it a commitment to deploy dedicated activists in a get-out-the-vote effort that involves leafleting, phone banks and more.
In accepting the endorsement Council member Charles Barron said, "This is a huge boost to our campaign. DC 37 and Lillian Roberts are one of the highly respected unions in the country. We respect their independence, their courage, their commitment to the working families of the 8th Congressional District. This endorsement continues us on our path to victory on June 26th."
