DC 37, New York’s largest public employee union, endorses Mayor Bill de Blasio for re-election

New York, N.Y. – Today, District Council 37 announced its endorsement of Mayor Bill de Blasio for a second term.

The union’s delegates overwhelmingly endorsed Mayor de Blasio for re-election during union’s monthly delegate meeting, following the DC 37 Screening Committee’s recommendation.

DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido said, “During the past three years, Mayor de Blasio has compiled a list of accomplishments that benefit the city’s working men and women. He expanded universal pre-K, has sought meaningful solutions to our affordable housing crisis and reached fair and equitable contracts with more than 98 percent of the unionized municipal workforce. His commitment to reducing economic inequality in our city deserves our continued support.”

“DC 37 members keep New York City running, and their work is at the core of everything we do and all that we have accomplished together these first three years,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“Because of them, New York is a stronger – and fairer – city and I know that together we will keep fighting for all New Yorkers.”

“You can find our members working in our hospitals, schools, libraries, city colleges and social service centers. Additionally, they work to uphold rent regulations and in the courts as interpreters and court reporters. DC 37 members provide the services that make our city run,” Garrido added.

With 125,000 members in 1,000 job titles represented by 51 locals — and 50,000 retirees — District Council 37 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, is New York City’s largest public employee union. DC 37 members care for the sick, the elderly and children. They maintain bridges, parks, roads and subways. They do clerical, maintenance, and technical work.

As New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio fights for our great city every day. He fought for universal pre-K for every four-year-old in the City. He expanded the paid sick leave law to cover thousands of more workers, and raised the minimum wage for all City employees and contractors. He continued to reduce stop and frisk and pursued reforms to bring the police and community closer together — while at the same time driving crime to record low levels. He expanded the number of affordable apartments, took on the landlord lobby and under his watch rents were frozen for two straight years. Bill de Blasio fights every day to make our city better and fairer for everyone — no matter where they live or how much money they make.

Garrido added. “We are eager to engage and mobilize our sizable membership on his behalf.”
