Statement by DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido on Mayor de Blasio's State of the City address
“Since taking office, Mayor de Blasio has focused on improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers. His State of the City speech reiterated his commitment to working and low-income families. This continues to be a drastic departure from the 20 years of ‘trickle-down’ city economics that preceded him.
“With crime down throughout the city, the implementation of Universal Pre K, and the highest graduation rate in the City’s history, there is much for the Mayor to point to with pride. Nevertheless, there are still challenges. Affordable housing is clearly one of New York’s most pressing issues. With prices still out of reach for too many working families, we support Mayor de Blasio’s ongoing efforts to undo the damage inflicted by years of unfettered luxury housing development in our city.
“We applaud the Mayor’s aim to create jobs that protect the environment. It is vitally important that all cities address the climate change that threatens our children and their children.”
District Council 37 is New York City's largest public employee union, with 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees.
