VMO – Volunteer Member Organizer
Working together for workforce empowerment!
The mission of a Volunteer Member Organizer is to strengthen District Council 37’s message to its members and the community through visibility and communication.
In order to accomplish the mission of the union through the Organizing Department, a workforce of Volunteer Member Organizers, known as VMOs, have been assembled. These VMOs are tasked with the responsibility of engaging union members and the community at-large to advocate for the protection of workers’ rights and benefits.
The VMOs, dressed in DC 37 t-shirts and hats, have become a “force in green.” Whether VMOs are holding informational sessions, one-on-one interviews, or handing out literature in the street, these union activists are out to galvanize the members into action.
District Council 37 represents over 121,000 public employees and more than 50,000 retirees. The VMO program is dedicated in its mission to establish meaningful contact with members.
In order to properly prepare volunteers for this strategic endeavor, a training program has been developed. This program is a comprehensive course designed to educate volunteers in the structure of the union, its different departments and programs. The training also focuses on building strong communication skills, and more importantly, to provide the volunteer a solid foundation as a frontline organizer.
