DC 37 Education Fund Classes
English as a Second Language (ESL) at Queens College
If you live and/or work in the Queens, N.Y area, District Council 37 Education Fund and Queens College (CUNY) are offering English as a Second Language program to the membership.
The program is designed to help members who are native speakers of another language improve their command of English. The classes are aimed at building skills speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
English as a Second Language: Better Pronunciation and Oral Communication (Tuesdays 6:00pm – 9:00pm)
This class will focus on improving communication skills in English. Students will work on the correct pronunciation of difficult consonant and vowel sounds in English and the proper stress and intonation in words and sentences. Through these pronunciation exercises, students will also expand their vocabulary with the goal of attaining a greater level of comfort and confidence in their speaking.
English as a Second Language: Reading and Writing (Thursdays 6:00pm – 9:00pm)
This class will focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary building, grammar, and writing. Students will read materials from a variety of sources. The readings will serve as models for correct grammar and sentence structure. Students will improve their grammar, increase their vocabulary, and become better readers as well as better writers.
English as a Second Language: Listening and Speaking (Saturday mornings 9am-12pm)
This class will focus on improving listening comprehension and speaking in English. Students will listen to American English and discuss a variety of topics. Focus will be on the understanding of words, phrases, and idioms. Students will improve their grammar and vocabulary when speaking to create more fluency in English.
