Defeat Trump’s regressive political agenda

A lot is at stake this year in the midterm elections, which will be held Nov. 6.
The main question is whether voters will hand a defeat to President Donald Trump’s regressive national agenda, a good part of which aims to cripple the labor movement and hurt working families. That agenda includes tax cuts for the rich—and Medicare and Social Security cuts for the rest of us.
All 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate are in play. All 63 seats in the New York State Senate are up for grabs, as are all 150 in the New York State Assembly.
Ahead of elections, the DC 37 Political Action Committee screens candidates in order to endorse those it deems best represent the interests of union members.
Here, we offer members a guide for the elections on Nov. 6. We urge you to study these candidates closely as you make your choices.
The statewide candidates endorsed by the union are U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli and the city’s Public Advocate, Letitia James, who is running for state attorney general.
The congressional candidates backed by the union include incumbents who have helped DC 37 secure federal funds and supported us on a number of issues. The union backs newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old who has enjoyed a national following after defeating Rep. Joseph Crowley, who had served for 10 terms.
The candidates endorsed for the City Council have worked closely with the union on key issues, and they are stalwart members of their communities.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
You must be registered by Oct. 12, 25 days before the election. Voter registration forms are available on the state’s Board of Elections website at www.elections.ny.gov/votingregister.html and at the Dept. of Motor Vehicles and many other state agencies.
