Union hiring hall draws 900 job-seekers
Stephanie Adams was one of the more than 900 New Yorkers who came to the union’s hiring hall hoping to land a job with the Dept. of Education.
Adams came from Staten Island and waited on line in the lobby to fill out her application and be interviewed. “I was a teacher, so it would be nice to be back with the department,” she said.
The hiring hall was held on Oct. 17 and 19 at DC 37 headquarters in Lower Manhattan. Job applicants started to arrive as early as 8 in the morning for the interviews scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
The DOE is looking to fill approximately 300 part-time positions for Sr. School Lunch Helper at school districts throughout the five boroughs.
The change went into effect in the beginning of the school year after years of DC 37 advocating for free lunch for all students. Schools will now provide free lunch to an additional 200,000 students, and families will save as much $300 annually.
