DC 37 Education Committee celebrates scholars at gala event in Queens
The union’s Education Committee held its 2018 scholarship dinner on Sept. 28. Committee Chair Alma Roper, who is also executive vice president of Local 1549, honored five young scholars for their remarkable academic achievement, and presented each a scholarship to help further continue their education. The five honorees were: Alyssa Guiterrez, Alexis Delgado, Benjamin Shi, Annamaria Cavaleri and Menting Dong. Keynote speaker Diallo Shabazz, administrator of DC 37’s Education Fund, spoke about the importance of education in a highly-competitive job market and expanding opportunities for future generations. Under Diallo’s leadership, the union’s Ed Fund is focusing attention on training for new and future public workers as a new generation of young leaders and civil servants join the public sector workforce.
