Union committee celebrates King
THE UNION’S POLITICAL ACTION Committee celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The annual celebration featured a keynote address by State Senator Brian A. Benjamin, who represents Manhattan’s 30th Senate District. Benjamin pointed out that solidarity between labor unions, community organizations and church congregations is now more important than ever. “King reached out to everyone, like those sanitation workers in Memphis that were on strike,” said Benjamin, of the AFSCME members King supported. After his speech, DC 37 Legislative Director Wanda Williams led the traditional candle-lighting ceremony to close the Jan. 11 meeting.
