Memorial Day honors fallen heroes
At a ceremony to honor workers who lost their lives on the job, Local 2507 President Oren Barzilay read off the name of EMT Yadira Arroyo, who was killed on March 16, 2017.
DC 37 members and activists joined other unions, city leaders and the New York Committee for Occupational Safety & Health (NYCOSH) for Workers Memorial Day.
The day honors workers killed on the job, commemorating their sacrifice while also calling for more support by adding safety inspections and other preventative measures to protect workers.
As of this year, New York has only 66 Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspectors to monitor worksite safety conditions statewide. The Trump administration has proposed deep cuts to the agency’s budget nationally.
