Union’s housing fair offers help
Braving torrential rain, hundreds of members attended the 13th annual housing fair in August to meet real estate professionals who offered mortgages, credit counseling, and other housing services.
“I came since I want to buy a house,” said Local 371 member Shermaine Taylor. “I got information on grants, mortgages and student loan forgiveness that I’ll share with my coworkers.”
“Thirteen years ago Lillian Roberts asked me to put together a housing program for members,” said DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido. “At the time more than 300 DC 37 families were living in homeless shelters as the city’s affordable housing stock dwindled. Today less than 20 members are homeless, though one homeless member is one too many.”
