District Council 37 members overwhelmingly approve new contract agreement
New York, N.Y. – DC 37 members decisively approved a new of a new 44-month economic agreement with no give backs with a 98 percent yes vote last night.
The pact provides a total of 7.42 percent in pay hikes; back pay; plus additional resources to boost employee education and training. It also maintains premium-free health insurance until at least 2021 and addresses issues of worker recruitment and retention.
The agreement includes an agreement to work together with the City to opt-in to the NYS Paid Family Leave program by January, 2019. It covers approximately 100,000 DC 37 members and sets the pattern for the separate contracts of DC 37’s other 25,000 members not covered by this agreement.
“Our members have spoken loudly and clearly in favor of a new 44-month economic agreement, which provides for a total pay hike of 7.42 percent, substantial funding for benefits, a new paid family leave plan, and a continuation of premium-free health insurance until at least 2021,” said DC 37 Executive Director Henry Garrido. “The 98 percent yes vote was a powerful display of union solidarity.”
The term of the contract runs from Sept. 26, 2017 to May 25, 2021 and includes three pay raises:
- 2 percent raise on the first day of the contract, Sept. 26, 2017
- 2.25 percent increase on Sept. 26, 2018 and
- 3 percent hike on Oct. 26, 2019.
The raises exceed the rate of inflation, according past and projected rates. When compounded, the total pay increase amounts to 7.42.
District Council 37 is New York City's largest public employee union, with 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees.
